Thursday Call: Bo Nix Throws One
Chip's Thursday Call for Seahawks at Broncos. One interception from Bo Nix, posted before kickoff, graded Friday.
The call: Bo Nix throws at least one interception against Seattle on Thursday, Oct 15.
What counts as success: one or more interceptions for Nix in the final ESPN box score. Zero means the call missed, and I write that Friday.
Posted: Wednesday morning on X, before kickoff. It stays on the board either way.
Here's why I'm not hedging. Seattle has eleven takeaways this season, most in the league, and seven interceptions, tied for most. That defense doesn't wait for gifts. It goes and takes them. On the other side, Nix is completing 59.9 percent of his passes. Four out of ten throws end up somewhere other than a Broncos receiver's hands, and I'm putting my good name on one of them landing in a Seahawks jersey.
Now the part where you get to yell at me. Nix has three interceptions in 162 attempts. That's one pick every fifty-odd throws, and Denver won't throw fifty times on a Thursday. If you're a Broncos fan, that's your whole case, and it's a good one.
So understand what I'm claiming and what I'm not. I'm not saying Nix is bad, and I'm not saying Denver loses. I'm saying his misses finally run into the defense that's best at catching them. A ball in the dirt is harmless against most teams. Against this one, it isn't.
And look at where the picks come from. Seven interceptions in four games: three off Drake Maye in Week 1, one off Jacoby Brissett, two off Justin Herbert, one off Brock Purdy. Pritchett has two. Love has two. Four of the seven came on deep throws, and on two of them a Seattle rusher hit the quarterback as he let it go, per ESPN's play-by-play. Throw it deep against Seattle and somebody is either under it or in your face.
You've seen the version I mean. Week 1 at Kansas City, Denver's first possession: a deep ball down the middle for Courtland Sutton, and Kansas City came down with it. That's one play from September, not a trend. But it's a deep ball down the middle, and that's the throw this defense keeps catching.
If he goes clean, screenshot this. The result column runs Friday.
